Black Pepper: A Peppery Story

For millenniums, India is producer and supplier of Spices to the World. Our Sahyadhri (Western Ghat) is natural native place for lot of spices and recognized by the UNESCO as World heritage site due to its bio-diversity. Sahyadri range is famous for its flora and fauna, Natural beauty, lush greenery, scenic spot and wonderful weather. Adding to this, the Tea and coffee plantation covering the section of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu create a heaven on earth.


One of the constituent of these estate is Black Pepper Creeper. The product of these creeper is our HERO of today’s story and it is rightly entitled as “King of Spices”. The Creeper produces the green Pepper Corn once in a year and corns were harvested when Corn start to turn to red and dried to get Black Pepper. This is one of the key revenue generator for small farmer in the region and often called as “Black Gold”.

Pepper is well-known for antiquity as a Wellness Doctor and household name for its healing power. It possess mild hotness which will be necessary to treat our alignments. As this spiciness is lesser than that of regular Chilli, the problem of acidity will not arise from this.


Black Pepper is useful for curing lot of the illness and used as the immunity booster. The key health benefit of Pepper are:


  • As specified in Ayurveda, due to its Chedana and Shoshana effect, increases the digestion and balances the Kapha and Vata dosha.

  • Useful in treating Asthama and chronic respiratory disorder.

  • Useful in treating Cardiac disorder and support in regulating the heart function.

  • Improves the immunity and useful for reducing the recurring fever or seasonal influenza.

  • Even it can be used in place of Chilli in cooking, in some cases of piles problem

  • Overall useful for Throat, heart, lungs and intestine and increase the immunity.


Ayurvedic doctors recommends 1-2 grams of dry pepper powder daily consumption to increase immunity and wellness.


My memory goes to nostalgia when I think of this Black Pepper. My mother used to give this pepper powder with Honey whenever I get cold or throat infection. It’s even part of day to day culinary of our house.
